Going for a walk

Waterloo is a historic town south of Brussels where you can walk undisturbed and beautifully. For example, you can walk historical routes or wooded routes here. During your stay at Van der Valk Hotel Waterloo, you can go in all directions.

Discover the Sonian Forest

Waterloo lies next to the Sonian Forest. One of the largest beech forests in Belgium, measuring around 5,000 hectares and stretching across 3 regions. The forest has century-old beech and oak trees, beautiful landscapes, clearings, water and history. You will find more than 350 kilometres of hiking and cycling routes and children can have fun in various play areas. You can walk here for hours and forget that the hustle and bustle of the capital is nearby. Also, the best protected areas of this forest are part of the Unesco World Heritage Site. So a walk through the Sonian Forest is definitely worthwhile.

Memorial Battle of Waterloo 1815

From the hotel, you can walk to the Memorial of the Battle of Waterloo (1815). This is where 300,000 soldiers fought in 1815. Here you will find a museum that tells the story of the Battle of Waterloo and the impressive Lion Mound, which overlooks the battlefield and is the most famous symbol of the battlefield. You can also easily visit this memorial by car.

Discover more of the Waterloo area

From the hotel, it is a fifteen-minute walk to Waterloo city centre. Here you can admire, among other things, St Joseph's Church with its large dome. Or visit Fondation Folon by car. This is a museum where works by Belgian painter Jean-Michel Folon are on display. Fondation Folon is located on a large estate where you can also go for lovely walks.

After your walk, unwind at the hotel over a cup of coffee or tea or perhaps dinner in our atmospheric restaurant.
